Chapter

Fourteen

Jon’s mind scrambled, searching for an out.

“Poppy!” Jenna cried again, but again the man ignored her.

“They’re Sealed!” Jon said. Words tumbled out in a rush, competing for sound as the hum on the Glyphcrafter’s gloves began to grow.

“My family. My sister. Her kids—five of them. They’re Sealed, with a—a—Glyph of Seals only…I-I don’t know what that is, and someone is going to ex-experiment on them, and I don’t know what to do, and I need to save them. P-Please!”

Silence.

“Please,” he said again, swallowing the lump in his throat.

His words echoed through the open chamber, bouncing off walls and haunting him when the echo returned.

Robert’s hand faltered. It looked to be more from the weariness of old bones than hesitation.

“Who?” he asked. “Who Sealed them?”

“Magelord Kilren Andleroy,” Jon said, surprising himself at the hatred in his own voice. “Magelord Andleroy is keeping my sister and her family between life and death, and he wants the same thing everyone else wants from us. I need to save them, but the only way I can is with a Higher Glyph. Or at least, I think that’s it. I don’t…” He swallowed, the weight of his task pressing down on him like the bronze hawk had fallen already and was crushing his bones to dust. “I just…yeah.”

It wasn’t necessarily how he would have ended his speech if given the choice, but that was life, wasn’t it?

That’s life, and hopefully I have a few more minutes of it, at least.

After a long moment, Robert Laan, Pantri’s brother, Jenna’s grandfather, and renowned Glyphcrafter of Kaladra’s Hall, lowered his hand, the light of the Glyph darkening with a dying thrum.

“You search for the world’s unmaking, Lorraine,” Robert said, standing tall and meeting Jon’s eyes with his own green ones. He shook his head.

“I’m just trying to help my family.”

I’m just trying not to screw up this one single thing.

“It is not my area of expertise, but perhaps I can provide a map to thwart your aimlessness,” Robert said. “The University Hierophantia East is home to any text and teacher you might find in the ways of Higher Glyphs. You might try a one professor Illian Zan.”

Jon stood, stunned.

“The…University Hierophantia…that’s where they make Magelords?”

Robert raised an eyebrow.

“Where else to learn about Glyphs to undo what your Magelord has done?”

“I don’t know, I just—”

“Listen, Lorraine,” the Glyphcrafter spat. Even his granddaughter recoiled at the venom in the words. She probably wasn’t used to hearing him speak like that.

“No, you listen!” Jon shouted, whirling on the old man and storming toward him. “No one here seems to get it,” he said, looking around from Robert to Jenna to Sven.

The old man stared back at him while Jenna and Sven avoided eye contact.

“My sister has five kids!” he shouted, voice ringing high and desperate in the empty halls of the fallen Order. “Can you believe that?” he asked, tears streaking down his face. The world was too blurry to see. He didn’t care. “That’s way too many kids! Five!”

He laughed, crying.

“She
